Do Dogs Have a Favorite Person? The Oxytocin Science Behind Canine Bonding

Yes, and it's not favoritism in the way that sounds. In 2015, researchers at Azabu University in Japan found that when a dog gazes at its owner, both of their bodies release oxytocin, the same hormone tied to bonding between parents and infants (Nagasawa et al., Science, April 2015). The longer the gaze, the bigger the hormone rise, on both ends.
That gaze-oxytocin loop is the closest thing science has to an explanation for why a dog seems to light up for one particular person. It isn't about who hands out the most treats. It's a feedback loop, and it runs specifically between a dog and whoever is on the other end of that stare.
The 2015 Study That Found the Bonding Loop
Researchers Miho Nagasawa and Takefumi Kikusui had 30 dog-owner pairs interact freely for 30 minutes, then measured oxytocin in the owners' urine. Owners whose dogs gazed at them the longest, 21 of the 30 dogs, showed a significant rise in oxytocin after the interaction. Owners of the 9 short-gaze dogs showed no such change (Nagasawa et al., Science, April 2015).
The team then tested it the other way. They gave 27 dogs a dose of oxytocin, or a saline placebo, up the nose, and the female dogs who received the real hormone gazed at their owners longer, which in turn raised the owners' oxytocin too, even though the owners hadn't received any hormone themselves. Gaze in, oxytocin out, on both ends of the leash.
This Might Be a Dog-Specific Trait, Not Just a Socialization Thing
The same 2015 study tested hand-raised wolves against the dogs, and the wolves didn't show the gaze-oxytocin loop at all, despite plenty of exposure to their human caregivers. That's a meaningful clue that this bonding mechanism may have developed specifically during dog domestication rather than through simple exposure to people.
That said, this is genuinely contested. A 2023 commentary in PNAS pushed back on broader claims that wolves show comparable attachment to dogs, arguing some of those follow-up studies used inconsistent test protocols (Gácsi, Miklósi, and Topál, 2023). What's well established is that dogs show the loop reliably. Whether it's truly unique to dogs is still being argued out in the literature.
Your Dog's Brain Responds to Your Scent, Specifically
Neuroscientist Gregory Berns trained 12 dogs to lie still, awake, inside an MRI scanner, then exposed them to five scents: a familiar person, a familiar dog, an unfamiliar person, an unfamiliar dog, and the dog's own scent. The caudate nucleus, a brain region tied to reward, activated most strongly for the familiar person's scent, more than for any of the other four, including the dog's own smell (Berns et al., Behavioural Processes, 2015).
That's a striking result. Of everything tested, including itself, a dog's brain treats the scent of its person as the single biggest reward signal in the room.
So What Actually Decides Who the Favorite Is?
Research on dog attachment styles, modeled directly on the classic attachment tests used with human infants, points to a consistent pattern: dogs form the strongest bond with whoever provides the most consistent, responsive care, not necessarily whoever spends the most raw hours in the house (Payne, Bennett, and McGreevy, and related attachment-style research).
Gaze duration matters specifically because it's the trigger for the oxytocin loop above, and it isn't universal across every dog the same way. A 2017 follow-up study found ancient Japanese breeds like the Shiba Inu bond almost entirely through eye contact, seeking physical touch for only about five seconds on average, while other breeds rely far more on physical contact to bond (Nagasawa et al., Frontiers in Psychology, 2017). A dog's "favorite person" cues can look completely different from one dog to the next.
Is It a Fixed Ranking, or Does It Change?
A 2026 study out of Duke University's Canine Cognition Center tested 31 dogs from multi-dog households and found their preference for a person over another household dog depended heavily on context, not a locked-in hierarchy. A dog might sit near its favorite person in one moment and choose something else entirely in the next, depending on what's competing for its attention (Duke Canine Cognition Center, Animal Cognition, 2026).
In other words, "favorite person" isn't a permanent title stamped on one household member. It's closer to a running tally, shaped by who's offering responsive care and consistent eye contact right now, not a decision your dog made once and never revisited.
